Ransom -ware. It’s scary when you are unaware of what you don’t know. Most Accounting practices and Services Professionals have a massive false sense of security, when it comes to their Data, computer and mobile use.
One of the latest kids on the block using this technique (and others) is the dreaded ‘crypto type’ ransomware, which if you haven’t experienced it yourself, chances are that you know someone in business that has.
This is where files on your machine and in most cases the servers or file shares that you have connected, are all encrypted and the only ways you can recover are to either pay a ransom (usually from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars) to hopefully be given a key to unlock the files, or to restore.
Pay the ransom or do a full restore of your affected data. Either way, downtime is experienced as people have no access to their data.

Here are 3 essentials to protect your business and data, from external threats like viruses and Ransom-ware.
- The primary method of data breaches is still email and therefore having a robust email scanning facility in place, to scan email before it even gets to your mail server is highly recommended.
- At the edge of the network have a robust firewall with good Intrusion Detection and Command and Control (C&C) detection services, to try and detect and stop malicious applications on machines inside the network from ‘calling home’ and passing out all your data.
- Online file based backups need to be isolated and not have any ‘share’ attachments if possible otherwise they too could be all rendered useless. Offline backup methods such as tape or external disk are proving to be valuable recovery tools in these scenarios
