“To scale your business, you must have deep and narrow teams”
Over the years, we’ve found that the best way to motivate my team is to focus on productivity. Although team-building activities and treats are always appreciated, they only temporarily boost morale.
What really makes a difference is when people are able to see the fruits of their labor.
Job satisfaction is achieved when jobs are complete, and this leads to a sense of accomplishment and increases self-esteem and staff morale.
Good morale among employees is essential to maintaining a productive and positive work environment. When morale is high, people are more likely to be engaged with their work and invested in the success of the organization. On the other hand, low morale can lead to apathy, absenteeism, and turnover.
There are a number of factors that can impact morale, in addition to a sense of accomplishment when they complete jobs. People need to feel that their efforts are being recognized. A simple “thank you that was a job well done” is much more constructive and productive than when the only time a Manager speaks to their staff is when a mistake is made followed by a criticism. Every criticism needs to be followed up by 5 praises to neutralize the one criticism, so build up the praises in case one day you need to criticize or correct a mistake.
Achieving a result and completing a project, either individually or as a team, is amazingly effective at increasing the spirits of everyone in your organization and can be much more sustainable than a “quick fix” morale booster. When you achieve something as a team it instills a sense of pride and ownership in the entire group, this is sustainable because it tangibly shows everyone what they are capable of and that their efforts do matter.
Quick-fix morale boosters such as free lunches might make people happy at the moment, but those things don’t last.
If someone has too many half-complete jobs on their register, this will play havoc with staff morale. As a manager, simply help them choose a single job to complete before they go home that afternoon and watch their spirit and self-esteem lift, as job satisfaction usually accompanies a finished task. Focus your attention on the right areas to achieve long-lasting and sustainable staff morale.
I hope this helps.
